The Classroom Aquarium Education Project
(Salmon in the Classroom)
This project is run through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to help provide California classrooms with the experience of witnessing and learning the lifecycle of the Chinook Salmon and Steelhead Trout. CDFW, works with other agencies to make this work. Dr. Jada White is a Fisheries Biologist with Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission. Our current Vice President, John Cowan, participated in this program as a science teacher in the Chico Unified School District. Now, he is retired. Currently, John and another Board Member, Eric See, are directly involved with helping this program in Oroville and Chico. Eric has also been instrumental in the annual Oroville Salmon Festival. Eric works with the California Department of Water.
CAF is instrumental in providing direct volunteer support, and financial support. Some of the equipment necessary is expensive and CAF has been able to step up and provide the equipment. Our local southwest chapter of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing comprised of disabled veterans, has stepped up to assist with this program, too. CAF has provided transportation for classrooms to get to the Riverbend Park where the kids release their fry. Just since October 2023 to present, CAF has donated over $4,000 in classroom setups for local Butte and Glenn County teachers.
We could use additional volunteers to visit classrooms to share what fly fishing is all about and how we, as fly rodders, pay attention to the salmonid lifecycle, along with why so many of us embrace "catch and release". If you are interested in helping by being a guest speaker, please call John Cowan (530) 966-0076.
